At Maria Rosa Wine Estate, olive oil has been a tradition for nearly 20 years. It all started when Mr. Fenech planted about 250 olive trees across the winery’s beautiful grounds. This initiative stemmed from a love for Malta’s agricultural heritage and a passion for creating high-quality, locally sourced products. Over time, the estate’s olive trees have thrived, thanks to Malta’s unique Mediterranean climate, a mix of calcareous and clay soils, and the dedicated care of the estate’s team.

Maria Rosa’s olive oil reflects the estate’s commitment to excellence and sustainability. The olives are hand-picked in October, when they are perfectly ripe, to ensure a rich and robust flavour. The oil is cold-pressed near the historic city of Mdina using traditional methods, preserving its freshness and aromatic complexity. Every bottle of Maria Rosa olive oil captures the essence of the land, showcasing the unique character of the estate and the surrounding Maltese countryside. Whether used in cooking or as a finishing touch, it represents the passion and tradition that have grown at Maria Rosa over the past two decades.

Seasonal Notes 2023-2024

Winter: A mild season, typical of the southern Mediterranean, with limited rainfall. Temperatures stayed above average without significant drops. However, the lack of rain stressed the soil’s already fragile water reserves due to previous dry years.

Spring: Warm temperatures encouraged the rapid growth of the olive trees. Though rain was sparse, light spring showers helped maintain the surface’s moisture. The trees bloomed evenly, resulting in good fruit set despite the absence of extreme weather.

Summer: Hot temperatures and multiple heatwaves tested the olive trees. However, thanks to their natural resilience and proper care, the trees remained healthy. The season ended with a positive outlook for a high-quality harvest.

Tasting Notes

The 2024 olive oil is remarkably balanced and harmonious. Its aromas are fresh and vibrant, reminiscent of just-picked olives, with hints of freshly cut grass and tomato leaf. On the palate, it offers a pleasant blend of mild bitterness and spiciness. The texture is smooth and round, finishing with a delicate note of green almond, leaving a clean and satisfying impression.
